Portrait of a Serial Shooter

From School Antics to Serial Crime

By John Kazalia, About.com

A few years ago, a school librarian I know said while she was working in a school in Grove City, a student threatened to urinate on a library shelf if he wasn't allowed to leave the library and go to the bathroom. Being a good authoritarian, the librarian refused, figuring he was bluffing.

Turns out he wasn't. Fill in your visual here.

When I mentioned the name Charles McCoy Jr. as the newly-announced serial shooter suspect, she said "Oh, that was the boy who peed on my shelf." I guess the name of the perpetrator of a stunt like that stands out in one's mind.

It's a small world after all.

But it's a large step from high school antics to serial crime.

The Grove City Record contains articles about his high school football career. Was leaking on books part of the football macho? Or a sign of something much deeper?

While I'm no psychologist, I believe this is someone fighting authority, whether it be in the library or on the highway. Playing football was probably a way of fighting those around him. Or perhaps his mother's claim that he is a paranoid schizophrenic has caused his outbursts then and now.

While Charles McCoy Jr. is merely wanted at this time and has not been found guilty of a crime, he fits the profile. Even his driving record fits: he has had several speeding tickets, most notably two during the period of the shootings. Probably another attempt at fighting authority.

Anyone angry or mentally ill enough to fire at strangers along a highway is certainly fighting something. Now that we have an alleged name and face behind the bullets, let's hope this story will soon reach a conclusion.
