Taking the Cars is a small book--only 60 pages--but chock full of everything you would want to know about Union Station.
"Taking the Cars" refers to riding a passenger rail car. From 1850 to 1979 Columbusites could board a train at Union Station and take it, directly or via connections, to just about anywhere in the country.
This book chronicles the history of Union Station, from a map showing the beginnings of the first rail yard on an 1853 map to today, where incredibly only a small piece of this magnificent building--an arch literally snatched from the wrecking ball--lives today in the Arena District.
Union Station was the third and final train station on the site; "Taking the Cars" says it was an instant hit and often photographed. Unfortunately photographs are all we have left; the book has plenty of them, inside and out.
