National Road
US 40 in Central Ohio

The National Road could be called America's first interstate. This first federally-funded road crossed from Maryland through Central Ohio on its way to Illinois, designed to connect the populated east coast with the sparsely settled Midwest. 225 miles of the National Road were in Ohio, and although the road has been replaced, remnants are visible in some areas--brick sections, original stone markers, historic brick buildings, "S" bridges, and more.
