Central Ohio Strikes Considered Possible

Terrorism.

The word strikes fear in all of us, especially after the events of September 11.

But could terrorists strike in the Columbus area? Local authorities think it is a possibility.

Central Ohio Terrorist Targets:

  • American Electric Power Stations
  • Battelle Memorial Institute
  • Central Police Headquarters
  • Columbus Water Treatment Plants
  • Defense Supply Center
  • Federal Office Building
  • Kinneary U.S. Courthouse
  • Piketon Uranium Plant
  • Rhodes Tower
  • Statehouse
  • Two Nationwide Plaza
  • U.S. Bankruptcy Court

To the left is a list of potential targets identified by local authorities and listed in the Columbus Dispatch and on local television news. But your guide can't help but wonder--what about these?
  • City Center Mall--Not a government target, but since it's located in the heart of downtown and next to the Statehouse, isn't it a possibility?
  • Franklin County Government Center--Could cripple Columbus just as much as some of the targets on their list.
  • ODOT/ODPS Building, Riffe Tower--I cannot figure out why the Rhodes Tower is listed, but not these.
  • Ohio Stadium--With a new capacity of 100,000, this would be a disaster. And Central Ohioans would likely cry, "give me Bucks or give me death!"
  • Port Columbus, Rickenbacker--Seems a no-brainer these should be included.

So it seems surprising that a letter to the editor of the Columbus Dispatch from Deborah Pryce said Columbus was left out of a round of recent federal funding for terrorism prevention because Columbus isn't a target. Really? Seems like we have plenty of targets.

Did I miss any potential targets? What do all of you think? Please email me with your thoughts on this horrible topic.
